How to be part of Freed.in

(This is only an outline, so please feel free to edit it.)

Freed.in is the leading community event in the Indian sub-continent and the developing world. Everyone is welcome to participate in the event. Here is how you can take part, ranging from the simplest to the most time-consuming:

  • Promote Freed.in: Talk about it to people, blog about it, come to the event, and bring others along. You should definitely join the Freed mailing list.
  • Volunteer during the event: A great way to be part of it, but involves a lot of work during the event, and little time to attend talks. Volunteers will be required to start working one to two weeks before the actual event. Send mail to the Freed mailing list asking to be a volunteer, and giving a one-paragraph write-up on yourself.
  • Join the organising committee: You can play a more active role by becoming part of the organisers prior to the meet. This typically takes about 10h/month starting from 4 months before the event (i.e., starting now for Freed 2008), and much more intensive involvement (about 10h/week) for the last three weeks, and close to full-time involvement in the 4-5 days spanning the event. You can, of course, choose to be less involved, and can also participate in some areas from outside Delhi.
  • Join the core group: If you are willing to mortgage the rest of your time, you can apply to join the core group that is also part of the organising committee, but is responsible for all critical decisions with regards to the event, including sponsorship, finances, etc. This is the only category where you are (a) required to be an ILUG-Delhi member, and (b) where your membership needs to be approved by the ILUG-Delhi office bearers. Nominations can be made on the CoreGroup page.

All volunteer positions are non-paid, and no reimbursement is made for travel to meetings, etc. Your only reward will be appreciation from the FOSS community, one measly event T-shirt, and the chance to come on a post-event trip, if any.
