ISST Workshop at Saathi Training Center, Kalyanpuri

Announcement

Institute of Social Studies Trust is collaborating with Sarai to hold a workshop for under-privileged youth at their Saathi Computer Training Center in Kalyanpuri (East Delhi). They want to expose their trainees to Open Source to avoid licensing costs and to teach them something new. The aim of the workshop is to introduce students to the philosophy behind Free/Open Source Software (FOSS), and to give a training in basics of open source tools.

Workshop schedule

11th Sep. 2009
  • 10:00 - Introductions
  • 10:10 - Agenda discussion
  • 10:30 - FOSS Philosophy: its advantages over proprietary tools
  • 10:45 - Introduction to Linux, specifically Ubuntu
  • 11:00 - Linux installation
    • Setting up a primary partition
    • Installing Linux in dual-boot mode and also an introduction of the same using Wubi
    • Getting the Indian language packs
    • Session on various applications and their equivalents on Windows
  • 12:30 - A small introduction on the applications on Linux (Ubuntu)
  • 12:40 - Lunch break
  • 13:30 - Navigating around the desktop
    • General usage, folder views, operations on them, invoking applications, creating and deleting files etc.
  • 13:45 - OpenOffice? suite
    • Openoffice Writer: basics (editing, saving files etc.), exporting as a PDF file, interoperability between *.odt and *.doc formats, creating index etc.
    • Getting dictionaries and fonts for various languages
    • OpenOffice? Impress: creating presentations, getting layouts, and custom templates etc.
    • OpenOffice? Calc: using formulas and graph generation etc.
    • Rest of OpenOffice?
  • 14:45 - Internet-related applications
    • Firefox - browsing, shortcuts, addons (adblock plus, video downloader etc.): Indian language related, Padma etc.
    • Pidgin (GAIM): creating accounts etc.
    • Thunderbird/Evolution: introduction, configuration and usage
  • 15:30 - Tea break
  • 16:00 - Practicing and learning, doubts for the day etc.

12th September 2009

  • 10:00 - Graphics applications
    • GIMP: general image editing, cropping etc., conversion between various formats using convert
    • F-spot: image organisation etc.
  • 10:25 - Multimedia applications
    • Using VLC, mplayer
    • Disc-burning applications like k3b
  • 10:40 - Command line usage
    • General usage, common commands (ls, cp, mv, man, cd, rm etc.)
  • 12:00 - External device usage
    • Mounting a CD/DVD, unmounting the same
    • Flash disk
  • 12:30 - Lunch break
  • 13:30 - External device usage
    • Printer: connect a printer, set up a printer, print etc.
  • 14:00 - General administration
    • Creating user accounts, deleting them, granting them permissions etc.
    • Internet connection: creation and deletion of profiles
  • 14:30 - FOSS help on the WWW
    • How to search for help (ILUGD mailing list is one source)
    • FOSS forums (specific to Ubuntu)
    • IRC help
    • Ubuntu Forum (register and create/search posts to get help)
  • 15:30 - Tea break
    • 15:45 - Practicing contd.

13th September 2009

  • 10:00 - Miscellaneous (clarification of doubts, practicing etc.)
    • Simple commands in networking (ping, traceroute, ssh, scp etc.)
    • Set up Internet connections
  • 13:00 - Lunch break
  • 13:40 - More practice on OpenOffice? and other open-source applications that are alternates to those specified in the ISST computer syllabus
  • 16:00 - Tea break
