Inderprastha Engineering College workshop:

Announcement

This is a workshop conducted jointly by the Computer Society of India, Ghaziabad chapter, Inderprastha Enginering College, the Indian Linux Users' Group, Delhi (ILUG-D), and Freed.in, and will be held on the Inderprastha Engineering College (IPEC) campus, Sahibabad, on June 7th, 2008, from 10am to 6pm. The aim of the workshop is to introduce students to the philosophy behind Free/Open Source Software (FOSS), and to show software engineers some of the possibilities afforded them by FOSS.

If you are from outside IPEC, and wish to participate in the workshop, please register at InderprasthaReg as there are only a limited number of seats available. You can also arrange to share a ride to the workshop by signing on at the trip registration page.

  • 9.30am-10am: Registration, and tea

    • What is Free/Open Source Software (FOSS), and why should one care?
    • Getting involved in the FOSS community.

  • 11am-11.30am: Sailing the digital seas Sunil Abraham.
    • Licensing, copyright, and patent issues
    • Piracy

  • 11.30am-12.30am: Introduction to Python programming Piyush Verma.
    • Basics of Python.
    • Your first Python Scripts / Programs.
    • Using the Modules.
    • Reaching a step further.

  • 12.30pm-1.30pm: Lunch

  • 1.30pm-2.30pm Writing Social-Networking applications with Python Dipankar Sarkar.
    • What are API's and how to use them
    • What is web.py
    • Simple facebook application
    • Simple twitter application
    • Why build social network apps

  • 2.30pm-3pm: Tea/coffee break

  • 3pm-5.30pm: Rapid web development, with Ruby/RoR Sawood Alam.
    • Introduction to Ruby and Ruby on Rails
    • The Model/View/Controller (MVC) paradigm
    • Setting and publishing a sample RoR? application (in minutes)
    • Gradual enhancements in the application
