Proposals for the linux-india.org Web Site

Please put your ideas about what can be done with the proposed new-look linux-india.org web site here. Try to be as detailed as possible, including frequency of updates and sources of information.

To prevent slacking-off later, please note that proposals that have 3 or more contributors from different places will get preference over proposals with only one contributor. You can add your name as contributor to an existing proposal if you like.

Content Guidelines

What content is and is not acceptable on the new-look linux-india.org web site.

  1. Does it directly relate to any of the following?
    • FOSS
    • The FOSS community
    • Software patents
    • Open Standards
  2. Is the article of a commercial nature? Is a cash transaction required to make full use of the context of the article? (If it is, please post to the ILUGD mailing list to get approval.)
  3. Does the article promote any non-FOSS software? Promotion of non-FOSS is not acceptable!

Proposed Audience

Who exactly will the new content (described below) be targeted at? Perhaps different sections for the following groups will help better target users?

  • Students (Introductory)
    • School - articles about using linux in curricular activities, replacement software for common non-FOSS titles
    • Undergrad - articles about programming, OS internals, utilizing linux to complete software projects, ideas on programs like GSoC?
    • Grad - articles about field specific software (Engineering, Sciences, Music, Video .. ), and advanced tools

  • Home/Office users
    • Articles on how to achieve common tasks on linux (Watching flash videos, video conferencing, internet connectivity ..)
    • Replacement software (Office - OpenOffice? , Messengers -> Pidgin, et al)
    • Guides on switching to linux
      • Installation, configuration
      • Install media procurement ..

  • Power users
    • Articles on programming or open source tools in the wild, that are commonly used to drive sites, companies, products
      • Languages, frameworks ..
    • Advanced configuration/customization articles

  • Country wide LUG/Linux Activities (Local events, conferences, talks et al)

Proposed Content

The following content will help the site become useful for beginners and advanced users together:

  • Installation guides for installing different distros (with some work arounds if somebody gets stuck).
  • Basics and advanced guides for terminal and bash scripting (we can also link to other guides available on the net).
  • How to start with linux: complete beginner's guide for those who want to switch to linux.
  • Where to get the installation media in India: a big list (we need contribution from other indian lugs too).
  • How to join a mailing list and become part of the community and other HowTo? 's
  • How to start programming and web design on linux (with list of software packages required)
  • How to start a local LUG and organize community
  • How to create and execute FOSS events (Install fests, LUG Meets, OSSCamps etc.)
  • Add your own ideas here
