Servers for open source work
A. Work to be handled by servers
A.1. Mirrors of FOSS repositories, and operating system distributions:
- Let us start with mirrors for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and OpenSuSE? . None of these have minimum bandwidth requirements
- A mirror for SourceForge? is also possible, but there is apparently a significant bandwidth requirement here. This will also require significantly higher administration, so let us leave this aside for now.
A.2. Servers for FOSS projects
Currently, we have in mind servers for
IndLinux and other Indian language computing work, such as
NewsRack ,
CreativeDot , Sanskrit utilities, and
Hindawi. Other projects can apply for their hosting requirements.
A.3. Minimum requirements for Mirrors
These are some of the figures collected by
NandeepMali from websites of corresponding projects.
A.3.1. Fedora
- Minimum Bandwidth: 100 Mbps
- Minimum Disk Space: 1 TB
- Minimum User Count: not known
- Update Frequency: 3-5 Times Daily
A.3.2. Debian
- Minimum Bandwidth: not known
- Minimum Disk Space: Full 356 GB
- Minimum User Count: not known
- Update Frequency: Four times a day
A.3.3. Gentoo
- Minimum Bandwidth: 5Mbps
- Minimum Disk Space: Full 130 GB | Distfiles Only 80GB
- Minimum User Count: 15 and preferably 30 concurrent user connections
- Update Frequency: Every four hours
A.3.4. Sourceforge
- Minimum Bandwidth: 150 Mbps
- Minimum Disk Space: Full 6 TB | Minimum 4 TB
- Minimum User Count: not known
- Update Frequency: not known
A.3.5. Ubuntu
- Minimum Bandwidth: not known
- Minimum Disk Space: Full 220 GB | Release Only 30 GB
- Minimum User Count: not known
- Update Frequency: Every four hours
B. Tentative bandwidth availability from NIXI
NIXI will need to confirm this, but the numbers that I have in email say that the mirrors can directly connect to backbone with 1Gbps, but 2 Mbps to other points in India. International bandwidth is much lower, but we can deal with that for now. Can replicate servers in different major cities. Need someone to donate hardware:
DirectI? ?
C. Volunteers for system administration
Currently, these include people at Sarai, people from Ubuntu India and Fedora India. We will need to finalise a list of system administrators.
D. Hardware requirements
To be completed.
